Hong Kong stocks failed to stay above the 23,000-point mark after mainland stocks retreated in afternoon trading.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index closed 1.59 percent or 360 points higher at 22,976 points by the end of the day.
Turnover on the main board was HK$338.6 billion.
The blue-chip index rose as high as 23,141 points after the lunch break amid extended optimism over China’s tech shares before pulling back slightly.
